Yoga is a popular activity that is done via a series of stretches, meditation and breathing techniques. More than just an exercise, it is also a spiritual discipline, allowing you to achieve harmony between mind, spirit, and body. This ancient art has been practiced in ancient India for five thousand years. Today, yoga is practiced in many parts of the world, allowing you to take yoga classes in Chinese, English, Spanish, and many other languages and cultures around the world.
The nature of yoga
Yoga is an old discipline that has been passed down many generations through oral tradition. As it spread throughout India, regions have developed certain styles of yoga. Some styles of yoga will focus on one aspect of yoga while others will focus on another aspect. Some styles may even clash with other yoga styles. In the modern age, you might even see hybrid forms of yoga. Chinese yoga teachers can teach a variety of yoga styles incorporated with other traditional exercises.
There is no one “best” yoga style, though. There are many popular styles of yoga, and depending on your preferences, one may be more suitable for you than others. Let’s see some of the most popular yoga styles and how they are unique.
- Vinyasa Yoga. Often considered the most athletic yoga style, it is also called “vinyasa flow” or “flow yoga.”
- Hatha Yoga. This style of yoga emphasises the traditional side of yoga and is often called “beginner’s yoga.”
- Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga is a more rigorous type of yoga that follows specific routines. It is thought to be the precursor of vinyasa yoga.
