Do you often get a complaint about your partner that you kind of snore loudly and he/she cannot sleep well during the night? Or is it the other way around? Whether you or someone you know has the habit of snoring loudly while sleeping, you might be interested to know about the causes of snoring and the best snoring treatment to help you or your loved ones.

Snoring is a sleeping disorder that involves the tissues around your tonsils and adenoids that can be found near the throat. When you cannot freely move the air in and out of your body using your nose and mouth, the tendency for the air is to find an exit on the nasal passage. This creates a vibration on the nasal tissue which we hear as snores.

There are a number of reasons why people snore and you might be able to understand why a person snores when you get to know what triggers it. Today, we opted to share with you these common causes of snoring among adults:

Nasal or Sinus Problem

When your snoring is occasional, there is a high chance that it is due to a problem with your nasal cavity or you are having sinusitis. These conditions block the airways on your nose that makes it difficult for you to breathe especially when sleeping which in turn causes snoring. Seeing a sinus specialist can help if this is the case.

Having Enlarged Adenoids

Other times, the way our bodies are built can play a crucial role in whether we snore or not. Some of you are probably aware that men snore more often than women. This is because men have larger adenoids. They also often have a narrower throat and cleft palate that can all lead to snoring. An ENT specialist sometimes recommends surgery to correct enlarged adenoids.

Being overweight

Obesity is a common cause of snoring due to the fact that our muscles tend to weaken when covered with fats. The weakened muscle around the throat is often constricted when laying down. Thus, when one is overweight, he/she tends to snore loudly.

Age

As we grow older, especially during our late thirties onwards, our throat tends to narrow down and may cause us to develop snoring.

Treatment for Snoring

Should you wish to get your persistent snoring treated, it is advisable to schedule a visit to an Ear, Nose and Throat clinic in Singapore. Since there are various reasons for snoring, treatments may also vary. It is crucial that you get a correct diagnosis first before attempting treatment for your snoring problem.
